You’re either Remarkable or Invisible

by Yan

The blogosphere has more than 70,000,000 blogs on the internet and 95% of them are unknown, unnoticed and unvisited.

As always, the ladder to the other 5% is never crowded at the top while the same cannot be said at the bottom. Many found themselves struggling at the bottom of the pyramid.

So what’s one trait that separates the men (women) from the boys (girls)?

Be R-E-M-A-R-K-A-B-L-E

By its own definition, remarkable means worthy of being remarked, noticed that goes beyond ordinary or usual. Hence, uncommon and extraordinary.

Being bald isn’t remarkable, being bold might be but not necessarily.

So how can one be truly remarkable in the ocean of blog mediocrity?

Seth Godin – one of the most remarkable marketers whom I have the utmost respect for – shared his insights on how to be remarkable in this 18-minute remarkably inspiring video.

Being remarkable isn’t all about having the most Twitter followers or FaceBook friends so stop chasing the numbers, get out of your comfort zone.

Don’t settle for mediocrity.

Do take home the lessons you’ve just learned from the video above. Heck, watch it another time…

And let’s work towards being that Purple Cow worthy of attention.

Or at the very least, aspire to be one.

“Being bald isn’t remarkable, being bold might be but not necessarily.”

Did you mean ‘bold’ instead of ‘bald’?

I’ve actually seen this video and it really is very inspiring. The concept of being a “purple cow” was an interesting one (weird, but interesting). With any of my sites I always try to go for innovation and put a twist on things.

For example, with Blog by Design I decided that I was going to do blog reviews, but that seemed too mundane, so I decided I would use the element of video, and I’m happy to say that the number one comment is “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

I think the great thing about building your own site is the chance to create something remarkable that people will talk about. Of course if you don’t take the time to put in passion and interest, you’re going to be invisible.

Thanks for sharing the awesome video! I watched it over again.

Yeah, I like your idea of video review. With a good bit marketing, it should take off really well.

All you need is to focus on one thing at a time, if you know what I mean…

To be noticed you virtually have to stand apart from the crowd. This normally means you either have to do something so much better than the rest or do it in such a way that it makes you stand out from the crowd. The thing is getting someones attention is only part of it. Once you get it you need to know how to keep and nurture it.

Being remarkable is something not everyone can be, even if they desired it a lot. Sometimes, one can be remarkable in an area they don’t even want lol

I think the problem lies in the fact that for someone to be remarkable, most everyone else has to be unremarkable. If everyone tries to be remarkable, then that only serves to make them ordinary, wouldn’t it?

Reply

Simon Fairbairn March 26, 2009 at 7:13 am

This only holds if everyone is remarkable in the same thing.

Reply

Dean March 31, 2009 at 4:23 am

Not necessarily, we can all be remarkable at somethings, even one thing, we all have different strengths, likes dislikes, hence you can be remarkable in your thing and I can be remarkable in my thing. That’sthe benefit of being unique, like being a “purple cow with yellow polka dots” Kudo to you Julie M.

This is rather timely as I am reading this book, the “Purple Cow”, now. I find it a great read. Short and to the point with some great ideas. If you are not remarkable, you are invisible. This is growing truer by the day.

Currently I am trying to build a new blog. And I got some new ideas in my head, I wonder which one will work the best. One of the ideas is reviewing videos uploaded in youtube. Though it’s not exactly reviewing, I will do some other thing on it. When I come to this page I can conclude that it works.

Great video, Seth really knows his stuff, I like his blog as well. I would agree that being bold is absolutely necessary when designing an effective marketing campaign. Additionally, this can be intertwined with a quality product as well. When you mention its not about having the most followers on Twitter, etc. I would agree that having quality followers that will be mutually beneficial can help add to your boldness and remarkableness.
