Why Blog With IE? What You Can Do With Firefox?

by Yan

Firefox IEIf you are still using IE, you probably may not have heard of Firefox? No? Maybe you couldn’t care less about switching to Firefox. You just like IE the way it is. That’s fine. Let’s not delve further about why IE should not be your choice of web browser. It’s highly debated. Let’s instead explore what you could have missed if you are not using Firefox from a blogging perspective.

Firefox is not just your normal neighborhood web browser. It is an open source browser where you can customize and extend the use of it with a wide range of add-ons that would somehow simplify and enhance your blogging experience. Why people are still using IE – in particular IE6 – when there is a much enhanced browser like Firefox is still beyond me. (Check the latest stats from W3Counter)

What you could have missed if you are not using Firefox?

Here’s 5 of the Firefox extensions for bloggers I would love to recommend.

1. FireFTP

FireFTP is a free, lightweight and cross-platform FTP client that you can launch right in your browser’s window with one-click access. This is one FTP client I use for its ease of use and simplicity. Now turn your browser into a full-featured FTP client with FireFTP. Who needs a separate FTP application anymore?

2. SearchStatus

SearchStatus enable you to micro view any website details right from your browser. With every site you visit, SearchStatus let you view its Google PageRank, Alexa Ranking, index pages on all major search engines along with keyword/nofollow links highlighting, keyword density check, meta info and other SEO-related tools all conveniently displayed in one discreet and compact toolbar. It is an indispensable tool to check the performance of any website for search engine optimization.

3. Google Notebook

What is Google Notebook? Google Notebook lets you clip or copy any information, images and links from the web site without ever leaving your browser window. Say you find some interesting article on the site you are visiting, you can other bookmark it for later reference or you could highlight part of the article you are interested in and clip it on your Google Notebook. Now bookmarking note-taking couldn’t be any easier, could it?

4. OneClick Installer

Sometime ago I wrote this article Look Ma, No FTP with OneClick. In all honesty, this is one extension you probably wouldn’t want to miss. OneClick is a Wordpress Plugin plus Firefox Extension combo that would reduce the effort to download and install any plugins and themes with just one simple right click. You need to first install OneClick Installer plugin before you could use the OneClick Firefox extension.

5. ScreenGrab

There is no easier way you could save grab a screenshot of any website into an image. With ScreenGrab, you can grab what you see on the window, an entire page or just a selection of it. You do that often, do you? Why not use ScreenGrab? It’s fast and easy to use.

Now with all the goodies Firefox could offer you, I hope you will start toying with idea of switching to FireFox if you have not done so. Make a switch now! If you are still in doubt, here’s 10 Reasons Why You Should Switch.

For a list of other useful add-ons, you can hop over to Firefox Add-ons Official Site. Happy browsing!

Last note

If you are already using Firefox, what other add-on do you think is worth a recommendation? Would you like to share it with me? I’m interested to know.

FireBug is an indispensable add-on for web development with FireFox: http://www.getfirebug.com/

FireFox is far superior to IE in so many ways, although IE8 looks like it has a few tricks up its sleeve trying to compete..

Hi David,

Thanks for your recommendation. Oh yes, Firebug is definitely an indispensable tool from a designer point of view.

I wouldn’t have a chance to use IE8 as I have been in Mac environment long enough to lay my hand on PC.

@rampantheart

I appreciate your recommendation of Shareaholic. Though I don’t use it myself, I’m sure others may find it useful.

Keep your ideas coming.. that’s what this blog is all about.

I also cannot understand, why people use IE, when Firefox is there. Is it just because they have not yet come across Firefox, or something else. It is unbelievable hoe slow the information flows even in this jet age.

I think people tend to stay in their comfort zone long enough to venture into anything different. We were all schooled to use IE long before the arrival of Firefox.
