I really do not worry too much about search engine optimization. There are a lot of other things I need to worry about when it comes to being a blogger. I think everyone else should probably put the effort towards writing some good content of most of all just marketing their blog. You will rank well in search engines over time but you always have to make sure that you market your blog perfect for the first six months what you don’t have that search engine traffic coming in.

I actually use SeoQuake, a Firefox add on that shows me amongst other things PR, Alexa Rank, backlinks etc. It’s good because it’s always there providing the information I need.

@Ryan: It really depends on what you are blogging for. If you aren’t into selling your ad space or doing any paid review then PR is absolutely useless.
Otherwise, your PR can be a gold mine waiting to be discovered if you are doing it right

Yan thank you for this informative post for newbies wanting to formulate and launch an SEO plan for their blog. Very vital to start putting together a plan early on to reach whatever goals desired (readership, affiliate marketing, branding, etc).
There is one thing I would like to point out that I think will help people new to this whole thing and it’s in regards to PageRank (PR) assigned by Google. There is a large and easily noticeable divide within the SEO community at large about whether or not PR is truly indicative to value to the page you are viewing, or in this case, considering to be part of a linking campaign.
Perhaps you should write up something on the topic so people can hear both sides of the argument and make their own call. I personally don’t use PR as a factor for my linking campaign, rather, I use other elements like domain age, target keyword representation on the target page, and traffic popularity from Alexa and Compete.com. Some food for thought…

In my pursuit of link building, PR has never been my primary motivation. Perhaps, I wouldn’t call it a link building campaign but rather traffic building campaign. All I want is to create a larger community of loyal readers.
As of late, I have done a good amount of blog commenting as my primary source of direct traffic irregardless whether the blog is dofollow or nofollow. Simply put, I don’t chase after the PR.
However, having a decent PR has somehow presented many opportunities for me in the form of advertising and sponsored review requests.
What is pretty noticeable lately is that the big G is sort of being very generous in its PR distribution. I have seen lots of blogs in its first month getting the PR which something quiet unseen of in the past.
I’m taking note of your suggestion and will surely take it into consideration.

Link building will always be an important part of ranking well in search engines. I found one of the best ways to find relevant, quality website to get links from, is a tool called Trackur. It is primarily meant to monitor your brand online, however I have found it to be a better link building tool. You enter a keyword that you are looking to rank for and the tool will scour the web for websites, blogs, forums, discussion boards, videos, images, and social media sites for any mention of the keyword. The tool is reasonably priced for what it can do, or you can try their free trial before you buy. Hope this helps with everyone link building campaigns.

I used the link popularity checker you listed above, and it turned up my posts with urls using the default permalink even though I just changed my permalink settings to list post names instead (also, thank you, due to one of your instructional posts). Any idea why it would do that? It also listed a couple of links to categories, but not all the categories and not all the posts. I’m thoroughly confused. Has this ever happened to you?

I’m sorry…. I don’t get it. Link popularity checker will only show you how many pages within your site are indexed by search engines. It will not show specific urls.
OK, maybe you clicked on the link and it directed to Google, let me just assume and you saw some of the pages still on the default permalink, is that right?
If that’s the case, it’s common as it takes a day or two, possibly a week for Google to update your url. It really depends on how often the Google crawlers come to your site or a specific page within your site.

Yes, Yan, that answer (days ago, but away for holidays so just read it) DOES answer my question. I’m still jiggering my site and Google still isn’t picking it up, but I’ve decided to have some patience! ;)

Thanks for the article. You should go in depth on each aspect if you haven’t already. Explaining why PageRank is so important, and why beginners should seek after links from those higher PageRanked sites.
Great list. I have used many of these tools to boost my SEO. I use the search engine position tool at http://www.seohosting.com/seo-tools.php it allows you to check the top 1000 positions in the search engines, although yahoo never seems to work. There are some other good tools there also.

Yan I just stumbled on your blog and I am glad I did. You have a lot of relevant information here that I can use. I am a fairly new blogger so im trying to learn as much as possible with seo and marketing promotions online for my blogs and websites. Other than blog commenting in the various blogs in your niche what other suggestions would you advise on doing seo for your sites/blogs? Good list I use the Bad Neighborhood Checker from time to time but I wish there was a better tool for that… it’s not the prettiest tool. I keep an up-to-date tool list on my own site.
Many say that keyword density is not a player any longer for SEO. In fact I do come across a lot of websites which rank very well for keywords for which they have an extremely low density or not included in the content at all.

Great post, will definitely come in handy, have bookmarked.In case you aren’t in the know, robots.txt file is the key to stopping search engines robots from indexing certain pages of your site which are deemed unnecessary to be included in the search results, yet many people still fail to get the syntax correct.
