The Art of Writing Damn Good Blogs

by Salwa

Most bloggers have a topic in mind for their blog right from the start.

However, don’t just flail around wildly in the topic as you try to write your posts. You need to find out what your readers want, what they will respond to, and what will get them to take action.

Once you understand your readers, you will be able to provide them with something of value to them in your blog posting.

Study Your Traffic

An important component of understanding your reader is using your search logs. Very few blogs have not gotten some type of traffic through search results. Even if you haven’t gotten your strategy for posting perfected yet, you are sure to get a few Googlers to hit your site. Your search logs will tell you what searches the search engine has paired with your blog. They are an inside look at what your readers are looking for and what they want.

Here is an example. Your post has the title of “How to Grow String Beans” and your content includes the phrase “green beans are good to eat.” In another paragraph, you have the phrase “green beans grow best in humid weather.” After you publish the post, you notice that you have gotten a ton of hits to it from people using some version of the “green beans are good to eat” phrase. You know that folks are searching for either green beans or something good to eat. It really has nothing to do with how to grow string beans, which was the focus of your post.

So, now that you know what your visitors were actually looking for you can post it and get visitors to your site because of your topic and not by mistake. Spend some time reviewing your search logs daily. This will give you ideas for new posts.

Know Your Weakness, Exploit Your Strength

The next key element is to focus on what works. You will have failures from time to time, perhaps more often than not. Nevertheless, the trick is to find what works and then expand upon it. Exploit your strengths. Once you have found your voice, use it to your advantage. If you find you have written a successful post, model a new post after it, using a similar style and approach. Embrace your successes. Expand upon them but stay true to them. You don’t need something new everyday. Most things in life include variations of existing themes.

Always try to write your best post ever but do not stress over it. Usually, the best posts are the ones in which you just sit down and write until you are done. Don’t keep going back over it to tweak it. Yes, you need to read and edit for mistakes and grammatical errors but don’t obsess over it. Once you reach a certain point in your writing, you will lose effectiveness if you continue to go over it. Simply strive to give your readers your best effort the first time.

The Art of Writing Damn Good Blogs by Salwa

It’s All About Your Readers

Don’t be too formal in your posts. The intention of a blog writer is to be conversational. A blog should elicit a response from your readers. It should entice them to comment. They should create a dialogue and some type of interaction between the writer and the reader. Try to write the way you talk. A blog should be casual and unpredictable. It should be flexible. The content must flow with whatever is thrown its way.

Remember, blogs are very simple by design and they aren’t about the latest technical gimmick. Don’t get caught up in designing bells and whistles for your blog. Let your writing sink or swim on its own. Visitors are not coming to your blog for the flash; they are coming for the content. Read what you have written aloud or read it to a friend. If you find that you are struggling as you read your own work, imagine what others will do as they read it. Most will probably just move on if what you write doesn’t seem to make much sense to them.

Keep updating your blog frequently. You may want to start out with a daily post to increase your content quickly and then taper off to weekly or bi-weekly posts. Don’t start your blog and then simply let it sit and stagnate. Even a monthly update is better than none. Just keep them consistent so those interested in what you have to say will know when to stop by.

Blogging requires time so if you don’t have the time for regular posts, then perhaps blogging is not for you. On the other hand, perhaps you can co-blog with a friend or family member. Remember, popular blogs are the ones with frequent updates. Always have your blog in the back of your mind. If you’re away from your computer during the day, carry a notebook to jot down reminders for topics you want to blog about.

Learn from Others

Finally, simply pay attention to what is working for other blogs. Take some time to monitor other blogs to see how they bring readers to action. Does this particular blog use numbered bullets or bullet points. Do they seem to be effective? Are how-to guides or top-ten lists bringing in readers’ comments? Are people voicing strong opinions in their comments? Never stop learning.

Find what works for others and then try it yourself by making it yours. Personalize it for you and your readers. Expand upon it. Tweak it. Look at the headlines for topics that work. Are there a specific number of words that seem to work better than others do? Try posting a series of articles that will bring your readers back.

The main points to remember when writing damn good blogs is to find your voice, keep trying, and keep moving forward. Know who your readers are, what they want, and what will get them to respond. Find out what excited them. Most importantly, don’t become stuck in your failures. Certainly, the failures are something to learn from but they are not something on which to dwell.

Remember, the small successes will bring you the big success.

Love it Salwa!

Keep updating your blog frequently.

Might I add:

…But if you inevitably miss a post, please don’t begin the next entry with sorry mumbling about how you’ve been sooo busy and it will never happen again.

It will (we’re all mortals here) & you’ll lose credibility.

Ballywick, you raise a good point about making sure NOT to apologize for missing a post or two. I will say I’ve done that in the past, and it’s the one thing I do regret doing.

If you feel the need to refer back to the fact that you may have missed a post or two, it’s best to make a light-hearted joke about it that can engage a reader or make them relate, than it is to sound like you’re looking for sympathy for your oh-so busy schedule!

You should also notice that the largest percentile of people making those apologies are doing so because of the huge mistake they made at the start….they’re the ones that started the blog saying, “I will post every day for the rest of my life because I’m a pro blogger”.

A tad sarcastic, yes but we all know it’s true.

Yeah, I’m with you on this one- simply pick up where you left off, no need to apologize. :)

Yes, I agree. Blogging requires work but that doesn’t mean it should suck away all your time. Work in small steps and stages. Hard work doesn’t always mean you have to sit down for hours at a time; instead, work in 15- 25 minute bursts then jump to something else.

In my case, that something else might be running errands, studying for an exam, writing a paper (single tasking) or maybe you might devote some time to following people back on Twitter, process emails (set a timer), etc.

You can’t go wrong with knowing your audience and source of traffic. :) Thanks for sharing.

Very good post, Salwa. I agree that it’s important not to stress too much about your content.

I used to worry endlessly about getting things just right and writing “perfect” posts. As you can imagine, that approach is very time consuming and not a terribly effective use of one’s time.

These days, I schedule my posts to publish a couple of days after I write them (keeping 2 or 3 in queue at any given time). This gives me the chance to write the post, walk away from it, and come back to it before it goes live. That way, I can look at it with fresh eyes, and if I spot anything that really needs changed, I still have time to do that.

While it is very important to write something people will actually understand with a personal voice and correct grammar. We shouldn’t stress much on “perfection” and use big words to attempt to sound smart!!

I think Business Blogging is the hardest. Because your customers are not necessarily interested in your industry even if they have to use it (i.e. ours – hosting). Business bloggers have to find and write good relative content and that takes A LOT more time than bloggers blogging about blogging or IMers blogging about IM or SEOs blogging about SEO.

Agreed on this post. This is why beginners should plan well before they start a blog. Fresh and useful contents are very important in a new blog since they will compete with stronger ones.

I always advise beginners to post daily for about one month and a half, then reducing it gradually. This is because you have to promote your blog, and I believe this should be 80% of your time after having sufficient posts.

Furthermore, I think this is not just about your readers but also to convert them to potential buyers. Readers are only good if you are making money from selling ad space. Readers don’t click ads that much. In fact, they hate them.

But if you’re into real Internet marketing, you should be able to convince your readers to buy from you. Otherwise, you are just blogging for charity which is also a good cause though.

Thanks.

Good point, Rich. It’s a common misconception for most beginners. That’s the very reason why we need to find the right balance between writing damn good blog for our readers and search engines.

Organic traffic from search engines are more likely to click on your ads than your subscribers.

I think your post is right on! I get ’stuck’ in the editing part and spend too much time tweeking and worrying. Good blogs are conversational and engaging. I also think size matters – Not too much! Too many people are too busy to read ‘a book’ every time. I know I tend to skim over something if it’s long. Not good for the blogger.

Your first point is interesting, but I feel that search terms are not a real help for writing my blog. Folks look for “filipino fried rice,” “Edward Meeker” or “childrens breakfast quotes” and they find my blog. I don’t really have anything more to say about these subjects, and the idea of detouring my blog about reading and quoting from classic novels into a fried-rice recipe compendium doesn’t really make much sense to me.

I like your tip about studying your traffic and seeing what searches people put into google or whatever to reach your blog. As you point out … it does help you know what the audience wants to read about.

It also helps you find out what google thinks your blog is about. It is really about that?

It can help you make sure you’re using the right keywords to let google (and eventually readers) know what you blog is about. That way your blog will come up in the search for people who are looking for what your blog is about.

In first notebook you should write every kind of idea which come to your mind.

In second notebook which you can call it a fair book … should get the entry of those ideas which can be capitalise.

Just do some homework in every weekends and clear first notebook by removing or just strike off those ideas which wont work.

You do raise a couple of very interesting points.

Unless you blog for yourself with no intention of anyone ever reading what you are posting, bloggers should write about what their readers want, not what the blogger want. Of course, in a perfect blog world, sometimes we are lucky enough when both their want and ours are the same!

Consistency in writing is important. Not only your style but your frequency, readers get used to it. For them it’s a bit like when you subscribe to a magazine, it should be delivered every specific interval if not, they ask to wonder what’s going on…

So posting daily may sounds like a good way to keep your readers to come over and over (it’s true) but make sure that you are able to fulfill your commitment!

Anyway, it’s the first time I visit your blog Salwa and I’ll be back simply because I like people who take time to write “real” quality content!

Recently, I started looking at how people find me through search engines. Believe it or not, a lot of people typed in “blogging about nothing”, and found my site through that. I always try to interact with all my readers and ask them questions.

I agree that you should only blog about something you are familiar with. Talk about things that you truly know about.

Consider also your audience cause the interaction part through their comments is as important as your topic.

True, you should be yourself when blogging.

I have been writing about different topics up to now.. I don’t know what I’m most capable of writing so I tried exploring all topics.. Only then was I able to know what I love to write and only then did I get real traffic to my site.. Wow.. I found everything you said as true.. Its good that you were able to share these things before I did..

To me the art of writing damn good blogs is to be your damn good self! Whether that includes ranting about midgets or your fear of flying squirrels… mix it up, have fun and be true to you.. blog how you talk is what I always say!

Great information and tips. The community of bloggers in any specific area is also an important reference point.

This is the first time i have ever been to any blog site and what i found interesting is that good blog is when u start writing and u don’t take much time to think and go over what u wrote in last few lines. Because i always take much time in the middle of my writing to make sure that i am stepping ahead in a right direction, but there i loose my speed of putting words on paper. Our mind is so volatile that sometimes it doesn’t store in its cache what mind had in previous moment and its always better to dump everything from mind to paper or in ur blog before that evaporates.
