Putting A Face Behind A Name With Gravatar

by Yan

You probably have not heard of it but I’m sure you have seen it whenever you visit comment on other blogs. A little image somewhere in the comment section? Yes, that’s Gravatar in work. What about it you may ask?

What is Gravatar?

Gravatar or Globally Recognized Avatar, is an avatar image that visually represent yourself among the blog community; individualizing you among the rest. It is simply a 80×80 image that appears beside your comment on a gravatar-enabled blog, therefore creating your own unique identity and branding.

With the acquisition of Gravatar by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and Akismet, we will be seeing an increase in the number of blogs that support the use of Gravatar. So shouldn’t you be getting one yourself?

How do I get my own Gravatar?

All you need to do is to sign up once with your email address and upload your image, something that may well represent your personality and you are good to go. Since your gravatar is tagged along with your email, whenever you comment on a blog that recognizes the use of gravatar, your image will automatically appear beside your comment. Think of it as your virtual identity card.

Sign up for your own gravatar now if you have not done so. There is no other better way to express yourself on other blogs than using Gravatar. Why not express it here? If you have registered with Gravatar, leave your comment below and see it for yourself.

In the mean time, you might also want to check out Pavatar aka Personal Avatar.

Thanks for suggesting a Gravatar to me. Perhaps I will sign up for one. Its like the same idea as having your picture on your MSN and the like. Visual representation. Branding is key too.

I guess this Gravatar is one of the most important thing too. Because people likes to know the person behind the post. Just like the “about me” page where people wants to know the basic background knowledge about the writter, Gravatar gives them the visual interest :)
