Adsense is probably one of the most popular, if not the most popular, advertising campaign. It is the preferred choice of monetization for beginners. Simply because it is the easiest thing to implement on your blog. The setup takes less than a minute and inserting the Adsense code itself requires little or no technical knowledge.
Nonetheless, it may not be the most profitable in dollars and cents. Ask any probloggers, they will not advocate the use of Adsense for blog monetization early in your blog when there is only a trickle of traffic. Well, at this point of time I can’t say much about this as I’m still in the experimental stage of monetizing my blog. It may takes a couple of months to actually see the results.
But one thing is certain, according to the report by comScore, it suggested that people are clicking less on search ads, possibly reflecting a lower conversion rate.
Increase your CTR with Adsense background
We just have to agree that it’s getting harder and harder for people to click on the ads, thus we are actually seeing lower CTR which translate to lower earnings to the point of being pathetic in numbers. The reason to this is that we have long been conditioned to block out what we perceive as advertisements.
Come on, how many times do you actually clicks on the ads when you visit other blogs? The answer is quiet predictable, isn’t it? In fact, the more seasoned blogger you are, the less you will click on the ads. Agree?
So how do you make your Adsense ads stand out from the rest, get your visitors’ attention and possibly improve your CTR? Suzanne from DotComMogul has released a package of 300+ Adsense backgrounds that will “..increase Your Adsense CTR 300% in just 5 minutes!”
Here’s some of the example:

- Google does not prohibit the use of background images so long as the ads are clearly portrayed as ads, and clearly distinguished from the content.
- Differentiate your ads from everybody else’s
- Backgrounds grab your visitors’ attention and boost your CTR
- Backgrounds Work On Many Different Size Ads (120×240, 120×600, 125×125, 160×600, 180×150, 200×200, 234×60, 250×250, 300×250, 336×280, 468×60, and 728×90)
- Backgrounds are easy to setup and use
- It works with other ads network such as AdBrite
All you need to do is to upload those background images and add a small chunk of code around your advertisement — and it is ready to go! These eye-catching background will surely catch your readers’ attention and draw more focus to the ads away from the content – at least for awhile or till the novelty wears off.
Nice package comes at a price
Surely there is no such thing as free lunch in the neighborhood, if you think you can afford to throw 5 lousy bucks to pimp your Adsense, cross over to DotComMogul to order the package now. I think she deserves it.

Cool find Yan. Good for creative designs; however, I don’t know how well it would fit into a minimalist theme designed for simplicity.
At the end of the day, it comes down to traffic. No matter if you are being paid for impressions or clicks, you’ve got to have large volumes of readers to benefit from programs like adsense. Traffic is the name of the game, and it’s certainly a challenge.

Good Morning Yan!
What an interesting concept – it goes exactly opposite to my conventional thinking where I go to much trouble to make my AdSense backgrounds blend into my page.
My thinking has always been that if the ad looks exactly like any other link on the page it is more likely to be clicked.

You guys should really try adbrite to make money. I think they’re even better than adsense and they do send you your money. you can make about 200$ a day if you really work on it and have a good strategy. http://webcashier.blogspot.com
@Colin: Yes, traffic matters most when it comes to using Adsense to monetize a blog. The CPC is too small to justify for a newer blog. The numbers are too small to make a living out of it unless you are in the same league as Shoemoney and the rest. I’m still scratching my heads figuring out how he could have made 130K from Adsense. Amazing, huh?
@Rhys: I would totally agree with you that the best option is to blend it with your site theme. In my opinion, these backgrounds only help to draw your visitors’ attention to the ads but whether it will account for ‘more clicks’ it depends on its relevancy and catchy titles.
@Joe: Glad you have found success with AdBrite whilst others are still struggling to make up for the numbers. Keep up the good work, buddy..
It may be worth giving this a try. But be sure to incorporate the marketing tool of the old school print advertisers…test, test, test. If you have a blog with decent traffic, try the Adsense background for a couple weeks and compare the click through rates. The more visitors you have (and the longer the test periods), the more accurate the test will be. If it works, keep using them. If not, toss the backgrounds and test something else.

Hi Yan,
Interesting mechanism to make the ads outstanding, but sometimes maybe it will draw attention away from the ads, my 2cents.
I’m still a newbie. So, does my readers experience in my blog got distracted if I keep experimenting ads this, ads that?I’m still working on networking and generate traffic.
And I found CommentLuv plugin you used in your blog is very useful!
A good deed though, because it helps other bloggers too.
Thanks Yan.

Jim
I appreciate your wonderful piece of advice. The fact is whatever monetization program I’m running here in this little blog of mine is still in the experimental stage. Test, test and more test to see what works and what isn’t.
Yan
Hey Aizal
Great blog you have there. Did you just change your theme recently? I remember it did not look like it is now when I visited your blog a couple days ago.
Now I just have to disagree that the background will draw attention away from the ads, in fact the opposite is true. That said, it’s important to test, test and more test as Jim has suggested, and if I were to add, do it when the traffic is low otherwise it may be too annoying to the readers. Lastly, enjoy the process of testing.
Anyway, thanks for dropping by, Aizal.
PS: Just off my mind: Are you sure you would want to use ‘Brain Appetizer’ for your keyword? I’m in the opinion it may not the best from SEO standpoint. Just my thought, buddy. You could just ignore it.
I’m also in the learning stage and I agree with what u mention…
Whoa! Thanks a bunch for sharing the info! I am bookmarking this post!
Now this is probably the best adsense tip I have read.
“Blending” seems to be the top topic for increasing CTR but on certain sites I would say these are the best way to increase CTR.

Has anyone used these and seen higher CTR. ?
Good posts, I appreciate. I always wondered if anyone could publish a list of pay schedules of adsense and the keywords associated with those particular words. It seems to be a fine line between shooting for the keywords that pay high but have tremendously high competitiion volume and those that are searched for often enough to make a bit of money but that do not have a great deal of competition. I look forward to any insight and updates you can offer. Keep up the good work!
I’m new with Google Adsense and your post will help my to increase CTR – Thank you!
