Interview with Gyutae Park – Winning The Web

by Yan

This is our second edition of “What separate the men from the boys?” where each week we will feature one prominent blogger who has inspired us in one way or another.

In today’s edition, we have the privilege of interviewing Gyutae Park who is no stranger to the business of internet marketing and SEO. Read what he has to say on winning the web.

1. We know nothing about you. Give us some interesting and completely unheard facts that make you a great blogger.

I work as an SEO at a top search marketing agency based in New York and I currently live in Chicago where it’s always freezing around this time of year.  I graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Industrial Engineering but decided that it wasn’t the path for me.  I still think that it has given me a solid educational and corporate background but I ultimately want to run my own businesses online.

I think my background gives me an edge in the blogging world because there aren’t many enginerds in the Internet marketing industry.  I don’t think that’s necessarily what makes me a “great” blogger, but every unique characteristic you have can help you to establish your personal story and differentiate yourself from your competitors.

2. When & what compelled you to start blogging?

winningtheweb

Gyutae Park – Winning The Web

I started Winning the Web in late 2007 as a way for me to share my insights and experiences with SEO and Internet marketing strategies.  I have a few other online businesses as well but I love blogging because it opens up a whole new world of opportunities – both in terms of business ideas and relationships.

3. How has blogging changed your life?

It’s given me a huge platform for me to share my ideas and make connections with people I otherwise would not have met.  That’s life changing indeed and I’m thankful for it.

4. To what do you attribute your blog success?

Great content that is unique – don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo and do something different.  It will get you exposure and bring you success.  Also, don’t hesitate to be creative with your promotion.  Content is one thing but you need to actively promote it to get people to read your stuff.  The saying “build it and they will come” is not true with blogging.

5. If you could give one sentence of advice to blogger, what would that be?

Find something you love and write about it.  Don’t just blog because you want attention or want to make money.  If you’re truly passionate about your topic then those things will come naturally.  Stick with it and be consistent.  You might be struggling to expand you readership now but once you hit the tipping point it’ll become much much easier.

6. What is one biggest blogging mistake you’ve done and in similar situation, how would do differently today?

I didn’t promote my content enough.  In the beginning, I simply wrote articles and waited for people to find them.  Don’t make the same mistake.  Write flagship articles and spend at least the same amount of time promoting them on forums, social media sites, and other distribution channels.  Spend money on advertising if you have to – it’ll expedite the process and help you to grow your blog.

7. What’s the best way for a blogger to make money, in your professional opinion?

The best way for you to make money on your blog is to sell your own product or service.  If you can’t do that, look for indirect methods of monetization (e.g. consulting, speaking gigs, book deals) and sell other people’s products via affiliate marketing – but only those you truly endorse 100%

* Folks, if you aim to make money on your blog, that article is highly recommended. It uncovers the truth about making money online.

8. Where do you think the blogosphere is headed over the next few years?

There are thousands of blogs that spring up every day but in the next few years new bloggers will have a tough time gaining traction.  Established blogs will get the majority of visits and the others will struggle to get attention.  Start now before it’s too late.

Also, advertising on blogs will start to fizzle out.  Blogs are essentially becoming influence platforms and banners ads aren’t good fits with that trend.

9. If you could write a guest post for any blog but were only allowed to write one guest post in your entire life, which blog would you write for and why?

Hm, that’s a good question.  If I was trying to promote Winning the Web, I’d write a guest post on TechCrunch.  The blog has over a million subscribers and that kind of exposure would work wonders in gaining new readers and customers.

10. Lastly, tell us one goal in life that you haven’t accomplished yet but are still determined to reach.

I’m planning on creating an exclusive Internet marketing membership site built off of the Winning the Web brand.  It’ll feature new ideas and tutorials that will be totally original and help everyone make more money with their online businesses.  It should be up in the next couple of months so be excited for the launch coming soon.

Thanks, Gyutae. You never cease to amaze me with everything you do at Winning The Web. To say that I’ve learned nothing from you is an insult to your intelligence.

Oh, I love that WTW t-shirt too.

I got to know Gyutae Park lately when his hacked twitter account sent me a note that led to phishing site :p Well, that was a light joke, but more seriously, Gyutae Park has been the household name for anyone involved in online marketing. I always had a thought at the back of my mind to get to know Mr. Park better and the strategies he employs that has allowed him to produce so many successful results. This interview was well timed, in the beginning of the year when bloggers are putting their resolutions into practice. I have to agree with everything Gyutae Park has to say, especially about the concentration of the blogosphere. Established or not, bloggers would always find difficulty succeeding if they assume that the work factor is not important in blog promotion…

Well I’m glad something good came out of my Twitter account being hacked.. :P

Thanks for the kind words, that means a lot to me. I just share my thoughts and strategies and the most I can hope for is that they help other people reach success.

By the way, I just social bookmarked this post since this interview has to reach the masses. There are many people struggling in online marketing just because they have employed tactics from the so called “know it all” marketing experts, who in reality do not know a single aspect of this field. They really need to be acquainted with Mr. Park if they want to make it big in their respective niches. Hope everyone follows suite and diggs, mixxes, stumbles, etc this post. :)

Thanks for the stumble, Richeal. I’m impressed of your awesome words for Gyutae (or Mr. Park). No sugar coating, the man is worth his salt.

Since you are already following him after that ‘incidental light joke’, I don’t need to say anything more.

It true that ‘the build and they shall come’ no longer applies. My first few months of blogging was like that, in well November I started doing some light promotion, and traffic went up and hopefully this quarter I start to incorporate social bookmarking and get some of my ‘genius’ earlier posts a bit of traffic.

Hi GP,
Thanks for your recent participation on my blog carnival. I like what you said about “Great content that is unique – don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo and do something different”. I think the key is to be different – your blog, your ideas, your thinking etc. It helps your branding too.

Good to know more about Gyutae… I did not know that he works as an SEO. Mostly my interaction with him is in one-off comments or via his little widget sitting on my blog

I liked one point here. Don’t just blog for making money and making money ‘big’ is impossible without added values such as services, consulting…or something different. There are 100s of thousands of blogs out there and limited advertisers. So, more than advertising income it has to be paid services as well.

@Yan, great series buddy… Looking forward to see more such good interviews here.

#6 definitely hits a sore point for me. When I first started blogging I was doing it only to promote my network marketing business and then only to send people I spoke with to it. So when I changed gears I wasted a few months not promoting in any way. Glad to hear someone so successful made the same error :)

Great interview Yan. I like that you are keeping the questions the same so we can see how different people answer the same questions.

Interview is indeed a fantastic way to ‘talk’ to another bloggers and learn about their successes and failures. We will be featuring more of “those who have made it” to inspire and motivate “those who have not“.

Using the same set of questions allow us to hear different set of stories from different perspective where one blogger is almost ‘unique’ than the next.

This is an excellent interview because it explains a lot of the questions that beginning bloggers have when they first start off with blogging. They need to know the answers to these questions and they need to hear them from a blogging expert like Gyutae. Yan, I am open to do an interview for this series if you need anybody else to interview. Feel free to contact me

Hey Donny

That’s exactly the real motivation why we are adding the ‘interview series’ into TSB – to give the readers the opportunity to learn from the pros and inspire them to be a better blogger in time to come.

Will surely add you into the list of potential interviewees. Thanks for the interest.

Great interview, Yan.

Gyutae, really liked your advice here:

“Don’t just blog because you want attention or want to make money. If you’re truly passionate about your topic then those things will come naturally.”

I’ve read some bloggers suggest that people should blog on a topic that’s hot like “Twilight” books even if they are not that interested in the topic. Not sure that would work well. A blog is so personal that I think you need passion as you point out.

Great article Yan, another informative interview. It’s really helpful seeing the blogs that I really enjoy getting interviewed. I really appreciated his thoughts on things, especially on his biggest blogging mistake, that one really speaks to my problems. I can’t wait for the next one. You should start a poll or something and have us vote on who you should interview next. As a reader I’d love to have a say on who gets interviewed. Although you’ve made great choices so far.

Hi Gyutae,
I’m a newbor to blogging and really appreciate your tip about writing with passion for what you love. I’m trying to build a valuable blog about real estate in the Denver,CO market that readers can use to add some transparency to searching, buying and selling real estate. It always bugs me when real estate brokers act like there is some secret that nobody can understand behind the scenes if a real estate transaction. But so far I feel overwhelmed with just adding the nuts and bolts– tools to my site. My content so far, is okay, but I wonder if you have any tips for me to help me build traffic without selling out.
