The Men in Pink Suit

by Yan

In a recent conversation with Brian Hawkins, we briefly touched upon on the issue of whether niche marketing was time-consuming.

It IS if you choose the wrong keyword phrase(s) to target.

Say you’re targeting for keyword “blogging tips“, it takes an enormous amount of link building to rank high on Google. Contrast that with another keyword, “blogging tips for dummies“, you’ll probably need minimal backlinks to rank on the first page of Google.

That’s the power of knowing which keyword(s) to target.

Building an authority site – in any niche – is time-consuming, so is making yourself popular on the Twittersphere.

But the whole idea of creating niche site is to set it up, write keyword-rich relevant content, ping it and leave it to the mercy of Google to come and crawl your site – with little maintenance thereafter.

If you target the right keywords AND after you survive ‘Google dance‘ and ‘Google sandbox‘, it should be on its way to the top #10.

If it doesn’t come anywhere near the first page, build your links with article marketing.

And you move on the next one.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re writing for your next blog post, creating Squidoo lenses or hubs or building your next niche site.

The rules remains the same.

The question is how to choose the best keywords for your website.

Just ask the men in the pink suit.

PS: TSB has officially joined the rank of PR4. What a wait!

Yes niche keyword research is very vital to it (plug new service http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1360427)

Though again you have to pick ones with traffic. In your example ‘Blogging tips for dummies’ gets 0 traffic while ‘blogging tips’ gets about 325 daily.

If I were to target a keyword based on traffic numbers only with my normal filters. I would target the keywords ‘blogging for dummies’ (95 searches per day though there is an ebook with the same name) or ‘money for blogging’ which gets 75 or so searches and could be taken with a 200 or so targeted links or even ‘blogging ideas’ which gets 45 searches per day and could be in the top 3 with little work and top space with some clever link building.

You’re absolutely right, Donace. I was merely making a point with the above example.

Anyway, nice service you’ve got there on DP. BTW, what’s your main keyword research tool?

I agree with you but if a content is just based on keywords, to me is not unique. Like the keyword search for “Make Money Online.” only 4 blogs are good blog with good content on the first page, the rest are just B.S content.
Keyword research is important but still it won’t win the position for word of month marketing.
That is why, social media marketing comes in to play as part of word of month marketing.
I believe in the future SEO and Keywords will no longer be use, but social media marketing that will take over the Google’s Spider.
People wants good information not keyword base content.

Interesting thought!

It takes a while for someone to “really” understanding the difference between organic marketing and social marketing. You’ll come at it later, I’m sure.

In the mean time, be the baddest blogger in town.

Right – we ask the man in the pink suit, but the question remains WHAT do we ask him?

Well, I don’t sweat much for Google. It’s too much of a competition. Given a choice, I’ll optimize for Yahoo and MSN traffic. They have better CTR than Google (I’m sure you’re aware of it)

And depending on how profitable the keyword is, if I don’t rank anywhere on the first page of Yahoo, I’ll probably add more relevant contents and build more backlinks naturally.

Other times, I’ll just create and forget them. At the end of the day, I’m only risking the cost of a domain.

I think for those really making online business as the main income stream, it’s obligatory to do the best to shoot the target at the top.

while for those who don’t, it’s an encouragement. but it’s very important to target the right keyword.

Yan, i have a question.

i just read recently that 95% of blogs have been abandoned; and based on Technorati report only 50,000-100,000 blogs are making good business.

i guess there’re plenty of reasons. but do you think it’s also because they are building on the same niche, which causing them lot of hardwork, headaches, and eventually abandon ship before reaching to the top in google?

Reply

Yan June 30, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Hey Harris

I guess the primary reason why most ships (blogs) were abandoned is because they boarded the ship thinking that it’s gonna be easy sailing, making money online.

Of course, it’s tough trying to compete with any authority site in any niche. The late comers find it even much tougher. So when the money was just a fraction of what they used to make offline, the inevitable happened.

Little did they know that make money blogging is just a myth. Anyone tells you otherwise is probably selling you products or ideas that helps her to make money online.

Agree?

But to get such kind of keywords I think you will have to use many tools.

Rite now I am using google adwords and some other paid software as well. So far these long tailes keywords are really useful to me and I am getting good amount of traffic from search engines.

Really good numbers of unique visitors.
