How I Increase My Email Subscribers by 60 in 7 Days

by Yan

What is the single most important goal of a blog? Loyal readership.

It holds true that most of the successful blogs have one commonality – a large community with thousands of subscribers who follow them religiously and trust every single words the authors are saying (read: recommending).

If money is the ultimate motivation – which usually is, nothing is further away from the truth that increasing your blog subscriber will always be your top priority.

Every possible effort, ethical or unethical, is made to convince your visitors to take one single action – to subscribe.

We are made to believe that the subscriber count is one of the metric to determine how successful a blog is and how much dollars and cents it can squeeze out of it. It’s true, no question about it.

It’s the reason why we flaunt it when we have it and for the same reason we fake it when we don’t have it.

How to Increase Your Blog Subscribers in 5 Minutes

In my pursuit of a decent subscriber count, I’ve been experimenting with several methods and one of them is to produce less articles (aka more quality articles) to make time for my readers to leave comments before being pushed deep into the archive.

I’m not advocating you to do the same here as you might have probably been schooled that search engines, Google in particular, favor blogs that update daily. Whatever I do is just my own experimentation and it is not highly recommended for a new blog.

However, if there is one single method that I’ve recently implemented with much greater success is…..

Wait, just to keep you in suspense unless you have a habit of scanning my article so please read on,

How I Increase My Email Subscribers by 60 in One Week

Let me first explain what kind of effect it has on my subscriber count. Truth be told, it really comes as surprise to me that in less than one week, 60 more subscribers have happily come on board in support of this blog.

rss feedburner

Can you believe that?

I kinda of regret for not joining the Blogging Idol 2. No, that’s a bluff. I’m yet to perfect the art of faking my subscriber count so that is the real reason why I refuse to join the game. The last Blogging Idol went to someone who was…..(perhaps I shouldn’t make any inappropriate comment here.)

There is no secret formula here. It’s just one simple trick of placing a call-to-action email subscription right after the article.

I reason first-time visitors are people who are in a hurry and dislike the inconvenience of searching for the right button to subscribe. I really need them to push the button right after they think, “Wow, this is a great post. Let me see what this guy is going to say on his next article.” Suffice to say, I need to “Strike While the Iron is Hot”

The last thing I want is them closing the tab button and say, “Maybe I’ll come back again” as in most cases, that “maybe” may always be ‘never”.

If you aren’t convinced yet, what have you got to lose spending the best of your 5 minutes to re-position your email subscription form?

Still unconvinced? Take a look at how Syed increased his subscribers to over 1800 in 10 months.

By the way, if you’ve done so, what do you think it’s the best position that has the highest subscription rate?  I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Having subscription links right after post is critically important. My theme hadn’t that by default and after I had fixed that – my subscribers count increased almost by five (!) in few next days.

I had not experienced with promoting email subscriptions much, I am techie and strongly pro-RSS which clouds my judgement. :)

I had some generic icon at that time.

By the way which one exactly do you like? :) I use 70 icons at moment – two fixed (after post and 125×125/grvatar for blogging idol promoiton) and 68 rotating on page loads in my sidebar.

Actually your gravatar icon is what I like most. Since your site is simple in its use of color, that icon really stands out if you ask me.

I’ve created it for blogging idol – as you see my comment link is currently linking to my feed. Mix of my usual gravatar and RSS symbolics.

It will probably drop it later but may recreate similar looks with new logo when it goes live.

I’m against you on this one Yan – I feel that readers will subscribe if the incentive to do so is there, and that comes from a lot of fresh and frequently updated content.

My lack of posting on my blog is the reason why my subscriber count is so low

I have to say this is great advice. When I first implemented this, I noticed a significant increase in my average daily subscription – about 16% to be exact.

I guess the reason is because once a reader is “in the roll”, all you have to do is provide more things for him/her to read so as to keep the momentum. It’s like upselling. Once somebody buys something from someone, they are more likely to buy more stuff from the same person.

And that’s why it’s normally a good idea to place “similar posts” list, “share this article” links, “subscribe if you like this article” links (which you have all included) and perhaps one or two ads (perhaps you want to test this?).

Reply

Yan November 10, 2008 at 2:39 am

Thanks for dropping by, Andre. Yes, keeping the momentum is the key part of the strategy. I’m glad you share with us your success story with us.

I’m trying to squeeze some ads into it but couldn’t seem to get it right or I should say, perfect. Oh yes, I’m a perfectionist in that sense. Thank you for your suggestion.

I actually have a subscription form below the comment box and just below where they fill in their details. I reckon it all boils down to the individual post. I know that if I find something really of interest and I want to keep track of the comments then I am sure to subscribe.

Yes, it all boils down to the quality of your writing. No amount of effort is enough to get more subscribers without the quality of your article. Content is king, is it not?

Hi Yan,

Cool post. I am super excited to see you getting more readers. I like your idea of having your featured articles as the first things a reader sees. Less posting is sometimes more in terms of what people are looking for. Adding a subscribe link at the end is a great idea too.
I currently am using Feed Flare at the bottom of my posts. Not only am I getting a big jump in subscribers I am also getting a lot of my posts stumbled. I am starting to see most of my new traffic coming from stumble upon. Its definitely part of the social media network that I want to learn more about.
Keep the good stuff coming!

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy

Thanks for the nice words. The featured article is part of the blog design and I usually use it to encourage more discussion via comments. On average, I’m getting about 50 comments (not counting mine) on those featured articles. I highly recommend you to find a theme design that comes with it.

Though I don’t deny the power of social sites such as Stumble Upon or Digg, I’m not placing my hope on them as my priority is to build loyal readership and not traffic. If only I could have the best of both worlds with SU…….but that’s not usually the case.

However, there is also a great possibility that they will unsubscribe later so we must also be careful with that.

Thanks!

This seems to work for me but ooh, it takes so long to grow the amount of subscribers. I need to have a look at the ‘Feed Flare’ thingy mentioned in one of the comments, I know nothing about this.

I scrolled down to the end of your post. I knew I was at the end because I saw the AdSense ads. I was surprised I didn’t see the e-mail sign up, If I wasn’t looking for the sign up I might have thought that the post is over, and clicked the back button to read another post.

I think besides the obvious of having good content, having your RSS subscription option available is key. If people have to search for it, they will forget about it before they find it. I have my option at the top, at the bottom and at the end of every post. The one at the end of the post seems almost invisible though. I plan to add the icon to it but I changed themes and now I need to look for the code to change it! It’s hiding!

“We are made to believe that the subscriber count is one of the metric to determine how successful a blog is and how much dollars and cents it can squeeze out of it. It’s true, no question about it.”

It’s true that we are asked to believe this. whether it is actually true or not depends very much on our assessment of ’successful’.

If our main aim is to produce a successful Social Blog, then yes, that subscriber count is important to us. It shows that all that hard work hasn’t gone to waste and we are appreciated for our posts.

But if our aim is to make money from our blog, then that subscriber count may actually hinder us.

How many of your regular readers actually even see those banners in your sidebar, leave alone click on them and pay for something from them?

And how many social bloggers are smart priced on their adsense account, because they are running adsense on a social blog which produces few adsense clicks, or worse, produces too many clicks from their regular subscribers which lead to no actual sales?

I have hundreds of ‘niche blogs’ which I don’t want people to subscribe to. I want them to click on an advert or a link to one of my other selling blogs. There is no way I want them to hang around and get something for free.

Sounds harsh, I know, but it’s the way I make money with blogs and to my mind, it’s more honest, than doing what some of the ’social bloggers’ do and try to sell things to their regular readers.

And I’m not saying you are doing this Yan, because you are not. Just reading this blog shows that it is a labour of love for you and your reward is a growing appreciative readership.

But I don’t think we can mix up ‘making money’ and ’social blogging’, because for most people it will not produce the results they want.

Zani, you never cease to amuse me with your comment. That’s very insightful and I hope everyone here will actually take the time to read your comment and gain something out of it.

We are made to believe……

Like the majority of beginners, I was made to believe and not because I believe so the statement alone proves my point that subscriber count doesn’t necessarily brings in the dollars and cents.

If my memory serves me well, we did discuss this sometime ago, didn’t we?

How many of your regular readers actually even see those banners in your sidebar, leave alone click on them and pay for something from them?

Possibly none.

Those numbers to me are just merely an ego-boosting social status and an indication that people are appreciative of what I blog about.

Since I don’t blog for money, I understand what you are trying to say here and I do agree with you that there is a huge difference between social blogging and making money from blogging of which the former is easier than the latter.

By the way, I’m in the midst of exploring into auto-pilot niche sites at the moment. However, I’m still struggling to identify those keywords that will generate the most organic traffic.

Probably your wisdom is much needed here.

Interesting strategy…I already do the one about NOT writing as many posts, but instead write quality posts to get a little love first.

But adding the subscribe form at the end of the post?

I guess your hypothesis does have merit considering your subscription rate did rise…so I’ll give it a try.

Well, Caleb…..you’ll never know if you don’t try, right? do keep in mind that it may not have the same result but it will certainly make a difference. That’s another hypothesis of mine…;)

You’re an awesome blogger, Yan. I’m soon planning to switch to the Ultimate Blogging Theme (Carl Ocab’s) which offers more targeted and better placement of subscription boxes. With that, I hope to get more subscribers to my blog.

Too bad you haven’t participated in Blogging Idol 2. You might have a chance to win it too. I agree with what you say about faking the subscriber count or using blackhat methods to increase it. Since the cash prize is so high, many will be tempted to do that.

All the best.
Ganesh.

Thanks, Ganesh for such a wonderful words. Oh yes, that theme by Carl is superb for SEO and its placement of email subscription is just close to perfect.

Probably I’ll join next Blogging Idol as I missed it due to me being deprived of internet at the closing hours. Thanks for your support and good to see you here, buddy.

I subscribed via the RSS link the address bar – but I think it makes sense to place a call to action at the end of an article. If someone makes it to the end, they’re probably going to want to read more!

You bet it is. Still at the end of the day, it all comes down to the quality of your writing. Right, Kathy?

Hey Yan,
I do have an RSS icon just below my post although the email subscription button is far away. I may have to reposition mine and see if it helps. But 60 subscribers over 7 days is just remarkable. Sure you don’t have any other untold secrets?

Hey Peter

You know I blog ‘naked’ and I don’t hide anything here. So there isn’t any untold secret at all. Just purely on networking with new bloggers.

I hope this tip is taken up well by others as I’d love to hear great feedback from you as well. You are doing pretty good lately, Peter. So it will just be a matter of time if you ask me.

Anyway, thanks for dropping by.

I have to agree that putting it below the post encourages users. And I am not the only one who would say that. I have personally talked to John from John Chow. Jeremy from Shoemoney and they have said the same.

Hey Syed

Thanks for the visit. In fact, you’ve inspired me to make the switch. Hopefully I could get 1800 subs in 10 months just like you…;) Wishful thinking, huh?

I guess I should be paying more attention to this (putting a good subscribe to my blog thingie at the end of each post)

My blog is kind of a mixed bag, so I realize that I”m losing subscribers day by day (since sometimes I post about blogging, sometimes it’s games, etc :()

Hey Mike

I think you are losing your focus on your blog to the point I’m not too sure if your niche is blogging, tech review or games. Pretty confusing if ask me…..

I wish you all the best, buddy and glad to have you here. It’s a been really long since the last time you came here…;)

Cheers

This post tells me that maybe it’s time to work a bit more on increasing my subscribers’ count.

Do you think I should add a “Subscribe to my blog …” link at the bottom of each post? Does that really work?

You definitely got my attention with the title of this article, because I am on that exact quest: to get more subscribers to my blog.
I have a loyal readership that participates and who all comment often, but getting them to push that button is difficult.
Can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.
Thanks for some tips on this!

Hey there

I’m glad this article is of help to you. By the way, how do you know that those who have commented often on your blog are not your subscribers? Keeping them engaged and coming back for more is one thing, getting new readers is another.

Can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

Put yourself in your reader’s shoe and ask yourself if you like what you are seeing. Does it appeal to you? Be as partial as possible and you’ll find the answer.

Anyway, may I just ask how did you get to know this blog?

It is a great improvement! I currently only have the call to action to subscribe in the sidebar and on top of the articles with help from What Would Seth Godin do plugin. I will consider adding the call to action beneath my post as well, either above or underneath the Related Articles plugin.

Sort of true with all marketing and software user interface design too – it’s the absolute no brainer obvious thing that makes the biggest difference.

Something that’s so easy you’d think I don’t believe that would make a significant effect.
